About Congregation B'nai Israel

Our Mission

Congregation B'nai Israel, an egalitarian Conservative synagogue in the Somerset Hills, is a center for spiritual growth in the Jewish tradition.

We are a warm and welcoming community engaged in joyous and meaningful tefilah (prayer), Torah study, and Jewish education beginning with our children and continuing for a lifetime.

We are a committed Jewish community working towards tikkun olam (repair of the world) through tzedakah (charity), social action, and acts of loving-kindness. We seek to support one another by providing comfort during difficult times and by celebrating the simchas (joys) of life together.

Our Congregation

Congregation B'nai Israel is an egalitarian synagogue affiliated with the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. Our congregation was established in 1990 as an outgrowth of a Jewish Awareness Series sponsored by the United Jewish Federation of Central New Jersey. Our goal is to create a religious community with the warmth of an extended family, a place where we can feel at home, share simchas with friends, and find comfort and support when its needed.

Our congregation offers a full spectrum of synagogue activities, including Shabbat and holiday services, religious school, adult education programs, social action and a variety of social events.

Religious Philosophy

Congregation B'nai Israel combines a commitment to the past with an appreciation of the demands of the present and of the future. We are very proud that men and women share, equally, all religious honors and obligations. The emphasis of our egalitarian service is on learning the richness of our tradition through participation. Our ritual practices meet the spiritual needs of our congregants while balancing the diverse needs of our community.

We extend an invitation to you to discover our very special Jewish community. Please visit, ask questions and learn more. We encourage you to attend Shabbat services, make use of our preschool and explore special programming: the Purim Carnival, a Simchat Torah celebration, Shabbat Under the Stars, and the annual Gala. Then, once you have experienced Congregation B'nai Israel, consider joining us.

We are centrally located in the Somerset Hills. CBI members come from througout the surrounding area: Basking Ridge, Warren, Far Hills, Bedminster, Bound Brook, Bernardsville, Mendham, Chatham, Chester, Martinsville, and Bridgewater.

We welcome you to become one of our members, one of our friends, one of the faces of Congregation B'nai Israel!
